Over a two year period, Sheridan travelled to Japan observing the culture and customs of the geishas and maikos in Kyoto, capturing the routine movements of their daily lives as they traveled to and from work in the teahouses of Gion. He then, using images of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district and post-production manipulation, placed these figures in unexpected contexts. The finished composites are a startling clash of Eastern tradition and modernity.
